SCHOOL COMPETITION WINNERS

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

The results from the School Holiday competition are in - and we are so impressed. 4 weeks ago we asked the kids in the Waitaki District: How were the Elephant Rocks formed? And we got all kinds of answers - mysterious explosions, Maori tales and geological stories. Which one do you believe? Here are the winners of the "Dig a Fossil" Kit in the three categories:

Under 10: Louisa Dixon (private entry)

Story about elephants and mouse

10-12 years: Leah from the Duntroon School

Maori story about how the Elephant Rocks were formed

Over 12 years: Shanvi and Jamie from the Weston School

Geological story about how the Elephant Rocks were formed

"What a fantastic window into the past. Today we saw fossil bones in limestone at two different sites. One set were whale bones. Just awesome that this trail has been put together, maintained and promoted."
