12.07.21: GEOPARK DISCOVERY TRAIL LAUNCH

Updated: Jul 5, 2021

We are excited to launch our Discovery Trail through the Ōamaru Public Gardens! Come and join us on the first day of the July school holidays to grab a free sausage and a free map of this self-guided Geopark Discovery Trail.

Bring the whole family and visit us at the Ōamaru Public Gardens carpark on Chelmer Street to grab your free map and have a fun time exploring and learning about some of the features in the Public Gardens. The trail is designed to introduce families to some basic map reading skills and the geological and social histories that are reflected in the Ōamaru Gardens!

Details:

When: Monday 12 July, 11am-1pm

Where: Ōamaru Public Gardens, Chelmer St Carpark

FREE SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Please note that this is a self-guided event. Safety first! Be aware of open water including waterways and ponds. Be mindful of other pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in the Gardens. Supervise children at all times.

After this launch event, the free map will be available at the Ōamaru Public Library as well as at the Aquatic Centre in Ōamaru.

In 2020, Network Waitaki sponsored the development of this project through their community sponsorship 'Powering our Community'.

"What a fantastic window into the past. Today we saw fossil bones in limestone at two different sites. One set were whale bones. Just awesome that this trail has been put together, maintained and promoted."
