Welcoming Tianzhushan UNESCO Global Geopark

Updated: May 1

Last week we were delighted to welcome a delegation from Anhui Province, China, including the Mayor of the People's Government of Yuantan County and senior representatives from Tianzhushan UNESCO Global Geopark.

During this visit there was an official signing of an 'intention to cooperate' agreement, strengthening the relationship between both Geoparks.

Our visitors were welcomed at Moeraki Boulders Cafe by David Higgins, Upoko Runaka o Moeraki and were joined by Mayor Gary Kircher, Chair of the Waitaki Geopark Rachel Plieger and the New Zealand Commission for UNESCO Secretary General Vicki Soanes who said "I was delighted to be present for the signing of the Geopark agreement between the Waitaki Whitestone and Tianzhusan UNESCO Global Geoparks. Co-operation between Geoparks is a fundamental part of the Geoparks programme and I am very pleased to see Waitaki so actively engaged in the international Geoparks network.”

We shared delicious kai before visiting some of our impressive Geosites and the Vanished World Centre.

Chair of the Board, Rachel Plieger commented "Thank you to all involved and we know this relationship will prove productive going into the future".
