The community inspired Vanished World Society was established in the early 2000's to help raise public awareness about the geology of the Waitaki district. The Centre in Duntroon (35-minute drive from Oamaru) houses an inspiring collection of fossils detailing the geology of the district and is open 7 days a week.

We have staff that cover 5 days a week and need volunteers to help us cover the other 2 days. We need volunteers to help with:

  • Opening & closing the Centre

  • Greeting & guiding visitors to the Centre

  • Providing information about Geopark sites

  • Providing visitors with information about Duntroon and Waitaki District

  • Recording daily visitor numbers and income

  • Some administration tasks

Volunteers will gain:

  • Increased knowledge of Waitaki’s heritage – The stories of our land and our people

  • Fantastic opportunities to meet both locals and visitors and work with an enthusiastic team of people

  • Great personal development with opportunities to both share your skills and learn many more

Requirements:

  • Welcoming, polite and concise verbal communication and tidy presentation

  • Honest, reliable, punctual and trustworthy

  • Basic computer literacy ideal

  • Ability to use your initiative

  • Comfortable to work by yourself

Time commitment:

There is a 7 day / week roster with shifts between 10am - 4pm. Ideally, volunteers would commit to 1 shift per month. Preferably weekends, but weekdays are also possible.

If you are interested, please email our Vanished World Manager via vanishedworld@whitestonegeopark.nz and we will get back to you shortly.

The module breakdown here is more detailed than typical overviews, with each of the seven components explained in context. The TOML snippets are directly usable, which is a big time-saver when you're configuring multiple agents. If you're planning to combine these modules, the configuration guide shows realistic integration patterns.

This sounds like such a rewarding volunteer gig - I love that the Centre is open 7 days a week and just needs a bit of help covering those weekend shifts. The fossil collection in Duntroon really is a hidden gem for anyone interested in the Waitaki district's deep history. Speaking of which, I was trying to make a quick social media post about the Centre the other day and ended up using a low quality image tool just to give it that vintage, old-photo feel that kinda matches the ancient fossil vibe - worked perfectly for the throwback aesthetic. Anyway, I'd definitely be keen to put my hand up for a monthly shift!

The fossil collection sounds incredible, and covering those two weekend days is such a manageable way to help keep the Waitaki's geology story alive for visitors. I'd love to know more about the training involved—checking out the volunteer page would be a good start. https://z-image-turbo.me

The fossil collection sounds incredible, and covering those two weekend days would really help keep the Centre accessible seven days a week. I’ve been using a volunteer scheduling tool that might make it easier to coordinate shifts—check out https://banana-nano.co

I’ve been looking for a hands-on way to give back to local heritage, so this feels like a perfect fit. Check out https://animatediff.net

"What a fantastic window into the past. Today we saw fossil bones in limestone at two different sites. One set were whale bones. Just awesome that this trail has been put together, maintained and promoted."
