The community inspired Vanished World Society was established in the early 2000's to help raise public awareness about the geology of the Waitaki district. The Centre in Duntroon (35-minute drive from Oamaru) houses an inspiring collection of fossils detailing the geology of the district and is open 7 days a week.

We have staff that cover 5 days a week and need volunteers to help us cover the other 2 days. We need volunteers to help with:

  • Opening & closing the Centre

  • Greeting & guiding visitors to the Centre

  • Providing information about Geopark sites

  • Providing visitors with information about Duntroon and Waitaki District

  • Recording daily visitor numbers and income

  • Some administration tasks

Volunteers will gain:

  • Increased knowledge of Waitaki’s heritage – The stories of our land and our people

  • Fantastic opportunities to meet both locals and visitors and work with an enthusiastic team of people

  • Great personal development with opportunities to both share your skills and learn many more

Requirements:

  • Welcoming, polite and concise verbal communication and tidy presentation

  • Honest, reliable, punctual and trustworthy

  • Basic computer literacy ideal

  • Ability to use your initiative

  • Comfortable to work by yourself

Time commitment:

There is a 7 day / week roster with shifts between 10am - 4pm. Ideally, volunteers would commit to 1 shift per month. Preferably weekends, but weekdays are also possible.

If you are interested, please email our Vanished World Manager via vanishedworld@whitestonegeopark.nz and we will get back to you shortly.

The Waitaki district’s fossil story is so unique, and covering those extra two days is such a manageable way to keep the Centre’s doors open for visitors. I’ve been using a local volunteer board to find similar shifts, and it’s made all the difference—check out https://aiphototemplate.com

The fossil collection sounds incredible—I’d love to help cover those weekend shifts and greet visitors at the Duntroon Centre. I’ve been checking my schedule and can commit to at least one day a month, so feel free to reach out with the next steps. I’ve been using https://cults3d.pro

The Vanished World Centre sounds like a hidden gem—covering those weekend shifts to open up that fossil collection to visitors would be a great way to share the Waitaki district's deep history. I’ve been using a local volunteer board to find similar roles, check out https://pika-labs-ai.com

"What a fantastic window into the past. Today we saw fossil bones in limestone at two different sites. One set were whale bones. Just awesome that this trail has been put together, maintained and promoted."
