15.11.19 Wheel of Change - Stories of Victorian Heroines

Forrester & Lemon Memorial Lecture: Wheels of Change - Stories of Victorian Heroines with Professor Katie Pickles!

What were Victorian heroines made of? How were they part of the wheels of change in Victorian society? Commenting on women’s changing status through the 19th Century, this lecture reconsiders famous role models and icons including Queen Victoria herself, Grace Darling and Florence Nightingale. How and why were these British women claimed in colonial New Zealand?

About the lecturer: Katie Pickles is Professor of History at the University of Canterbury and Royal Society Te Apārangi James Cook Research Fellow. She is currently writing a book about global heroines in modern history.

"What a fantastic window into the past. Today we saw fossil bones in limestone at two different sites. One set were whale bones. Just awesome that this trail has been put together, maintained and promoted."
